Back to school season has arrived! Whether you’re mourning the end of summer or you’re more than ready to get the kids back into their school routine, there are some important changes and to-dos to consider:

Start the new bedtime routine NOW. To get your kids ready to wake up earlier for school, consider making their bedtimes a little earlier each night for a week or two before school starts. Ensuring they get enough sleep at night will help them stay focused throughout the day.

Make lunches a team effort. Take the kids on a trip to the grocery store, farmer’s market, or coop to pick out nutritious snacks and meals together. This is a great opportunity to educate them on how and why to make healthy choices. Avoiding a diet full of processed, sugary foods helps keep their growth, development, and immunity moving in the right direction. Here’s a good rule of thumb and some ideas to go by when packing a lunch– Main dish (protein-rich) + veggies + fruit.

Meat sticks
Quinoa salad
Hard boiled eggs (add avocado and a wrap or sprouted bread for egg salad sandwich option)
Rice paper rolls (pack full of veggies and/or meat, and vermicelli noodles – nut butter is great for dipping if nut-containing foods are permissible)
Loaded sweet potatoes (breakfast-style with eggs and bacon or a classic fall twist of stewed chili and dollop of plain greek yogurt)

VEGETABLES (with a side of hummus for dipping!)
Snap peas
Baby carrots
Celery sticks
Sliced cucumber
Cherry tomatoes

Sliced apples (try sprinkling with cinnamon)
Sliced pear

Get some fresh air. Take the opportunity before they’re back in the classroom all day to put down the screens and get outside. Go for a bike ride, swim at the pool, walk to a park, or throw the ball around. Outdoor physical activity is an excellent way to reduce tension, increase strength, and overall boost immunity.
