When you think of what defines FUN to you, we’re fairly certain that eating well and exercising aren’t the first things that pop into your mind. Approaching a new way of living comes with it’s challenges, but it doesn’t have to be a drag. Instead of focusing on the things you will be weeding out from your routine, we want to encourage you to embrace these changes by capitalizing on all the good things that come along with it. Here are some suggestions to make the switch far less painful and a whole lot more fun!
Document your progress. There’s so many ways to do this now, especially if you decide to take it to social media. Some photo ideas would include before & after shots, a view from your morning walk, or the plate of greens you’re about to dive into for lunch. It’s a great way to get your followers in on the action and be fueled by their ‘likes’ and affirmations. Hop onto a hashtag to see how others across the world are following a similar wellness regimen. For the less tech-savvy folks, keeping a simple health journal is the original way to record personal milestones. Take notes on what does or doesn’t work for you and include detailed accounts of any marked changes in your overall well being. You’ll leave yourself a trail of encouragement to look back on if you hit a few rough patches on the journey.
Try something new. You’re already trying a new way of eating–you might as well go all out! Maybe you’ve always wanted to try a spinning class or do yoga. There’s a booming trend of themed runs and obstacle courses that accommodate to people of all fitness levels. Why not try one? Perhaps you’d rather do something with a group of friends? Maybe it’d be a good time to join that work volleyball team or softball league. Staying active is going to help you reach your goals faster and have more fun in the process!
Have a buddy. Getting a friend or family member involved is a great way to keep you on track with your new goals. You wouldn’t keep hitting the snooze button if you knew someone was waiting for you at 6am to go to the gym or on a walk. Send each other picture texts of the different meals you are trying at home. Sign up for a class together. Or have a sympathetic ear when there’s a food day at the office and that one co-worker brought the killer brownies you passed on. Having someone to share your progress with makes it twice as enjoyable!
Treat yourself. You deserve something special for your hard work! Perhaps some new athletic wear will give you the confidence to take yourself to a fitness class or just for a stroll around the neighborhood. Investing in a new kitchen gadget like a blender or food processor will increase the scope of tasty and healthy recipes you can tackle. Try not to use anything that would derail your wellness plan as a reward, like indulging in a massive piece of cheesecake. Simply having a little treat like a night at the movies or a new healthy cookbook might be the thing you need to stick to your goals for that week. Positive reinforcement works for a reason!
And remember…the ultimate goal here is WELLNESS. Well = Good & Satisfactory! All the sacrifices you make in getting there WILL be worth it. Just be sure to have fun along the way!
